Character

Name: Bolin
Fandom: Legend of Korra / Avatar: The last Airbender
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Time Period: End of season 1
Wing Color: Brown with green tips
History: Wiki!
Personality: Bolin is a teenager with a big heart. He wears his heart and literally emotion he feels right there on his sleeve for the whole world to see. Subtle isn’t a thing that he does well, or at all. As a result Bolin can’t lie to save his life. When every emotion you feel is clearly telegraphed by your face (and highly expressive eyebrows) there isn’t much you can do to disguise a lie because it ends up being really transparent. But in that measure Bolin is also painfully honest about things. He wasn’t afraid to tell Korra how he felt about her during The Spirit of Competition. During the same episode he also didn’t hesitate to tell Mako that he wasn’t in top form and shouldn’t take the face off, showing that he can be blunt when the situation calls for it.

Surprisingly, despite living a pretty rough life Bolin is oddly polite. When Amon was about to take away his bending instead of yelling or making a scene he tried to talk to him. His time on the street didn’t negatively affect his outlook on the world and in fact made him more grateful for the things that he had in the moment. When Team Avatar was taken in by the kindly hobo population of Republic City, Bolin complimented the hobo on his excellent street gruel and kept eating it even after the man mentioned harvesting it from dumpsters. He tries to see the bright side in any situation, even ones that are painfully hard to find a bright side in because that’s what he spent his entire life doing. Spending his childhood on the streets with a brother who has sacrificed his own childhood to make sure they didn’t go hungry or get separated left Bolin with little responsibility and formed who he is today.

He has a lot of enthusiasm for life in general. He’s been shown in canon to be a flirt and something of a harmless playboy. He doesn’t see the harm in playing the field since he’s still young and see’s the world as being full of endless opportunities. He’s confident about himself and is aware that he’s an attractive young man in a highly visible occupation and takes shameless advantage of it. (”She’s fun, I’m fun. She’s strong, I’m strong. She’s beautiful, I’m gorgeous!”) Bolin serves as a s foil for Mako’s more serious attitude towards the world and because of that he’s more than a little irresponsible. He follows his whims, things like dating a teammate on the eve of one of the biggest pro bending matches of their life, and throws himself into things even if they end of burning him in the end. Where Mako thinks in the long term, Bolin is someone who lives in the moment and tends to never think too far ahead. Because of this lack of responsibility he tends to come off as really immature when serious situations strike. Such as during The Revelation when he genuinely believed that he could help raised 30,000 yuans by having Pabu perform circus tricks. It isn’t that he’s purposefully being silly or immature, but that he was never given an opportunity to realize that some childish schemes just don’t work out in the real world.

Bolin is, despite his confidence in himself, something of a pushover when it comes to standing up for himself. Being the kid who has a tendency to get into trouble has left Bolin with a sharp awareness that conflict is something to be avoided at all costs. On multiple occasions in the series he allows himself to be bullied or intimidated (by Tahno when he vehemently warned Korra off of fighting him and by Amon when he didn’t even attempt to fight when it was his turn to be ‘purified’.) and doesn’t do much to fight back. This doesn’t mean he doesn’t get angry or upset, because he does. After he saw Korra and Mako kiss he went and had a tantrum and binged on noodles. He never does anything by half measures, but often his bad moods don’t stick around for long. He finds ways to resolve or bury issues so that they don’t cause problems within his relationships. Only hours after Korra and Mako upset him he was able to supposedly resolve things and accept it, though it’s hinted later that he might feel a bit of bitterness over his hurt feelings. Overall, Bolin is more likely to stand up for someone he cares about than for himself.

Because of how Mako protected Bolin from the harshness of the world, he’s ended being kind of naïve about how the world works. He takes people at face value and trusts them implicitly without a second thought, which ends up getting him into a lot of trouble especially when he ends up associating with the Triple Threat Triad that Mako used to work for. Thanks to his impulsive nature and tendency to get in trouble he tends not to be taken too seriously. More than anything, Bolin is a kid who is trying his hardest to grow up in a really confusing situation, and he isn’t always helped by his brother’s controlling tendencies. He tries his hardest to do right by the people he cares about but he’s sometimes a very clumsy person and this causes people to disregard his contributions. In the final episode, when everyone is upset over the loss of Korra’s bending he tries to look on the bright side and point out that she has air bending, which she had been previously incapable of performing. He tries his best to look on the bright side, even when things are quite bleak.

Strengths:
Physical:
-Earth Bending: is Bolin’s strongest skill. He has a very adaptable style that combines the neutral jing of waiting for the right moment to strike decisively with keeping mobile until it’s time to root himself to attack. In series he has shown to be good at quick decisive attacks when his opponent is off guard. He is also able to bend smaller sized boulders while not in contact with the ground (as demonstrated in the final episode of season 1 when he attacked Hiroshi Sato on Naga’s back or during When Extremes Meet when he threw several small projectiles while riding in a satomobile) though he isn’t as capable of larger feats while out of contact with the ground.
-Grappling: In addition to his bending, Bolin has some regular fighting ability as well that he can use in conjunction with his bending to hold his own in a close quarters fight.
-Pain Tolerance: Bolin thanks to his time in the pro-bending ring is able to take a good amount of pain and keep moving. A good example of this is during the pro-bending semifinals; when Bolin was struck hard in the arm he kept fighting through it.

Mental/Emotional:
-Teamwork & Perception: Bolin is a team player, able to work really well within a unit to fight cohesively. In several probending matches he was shown to have a good understanding of his team’s strengths and during The Spirit of Competition he was aware enough of their lack of cohesion that he stepped up and took control and fought in the face off.
-Unflappable: Surprisingly, Bolin has handled the extreme situations he’s gotten into with the new Team Avatar pretty well. He’s able to push down feelings of panic and face down all the things that the Equalists and Tarrlok threw at them with relative calmness. Even when Naga nearly threw some equalist mecha tanks that nearly hit him the face his only response was a quick yelp before getting back to business.

Weaknesses:
Physical:
-Still only human: Bolin can be injured like any other person, and has no special regenerative powers or anything shiny like that. If he is stabbed, shot or otherwise fatally wounded he will die
-Highly Specialized Bending: Bolin’s bending style is very specialized for the pro-bending ring, so much so that in real combat situations it tends to be more of a hindrance than a help. He’s good for big unrefined gestures like collapsing tunnels, but more delicate actions requiring a higher level of control are currently beyond his ability to perform.
-Average: In a series where everyone is pretty damn exceptional, Bolin is… pretty average. He doesn’t know how to metalbend nor does he seem to aspire to do so. He’s a good fighter but not good enough to take on a mob all on his own like some other characters. By being average he can also be seen as something of a weaker link when everyone else around him has much more advanced abilities.

Mental/Emotional:
-Mako: Bolin’s brother is a major weak point for Bolin all around. Mako raised him from a very early point so Bolin has trouble seeing his own brother’s flaws.
-Immature: Despite a rather difficult life growing up on the streets, Bolin has a rather naïve view on things. When faced with a dire need for money to pay for their place in the Pro-Bending championship Bolin’s solution to earn 30,000 yuan was to perform circus tricks with Pabu. He also burst into tears
-Pushover: Bolin has an unfortunate tendency to let the people he cares about walk all over him without much of a fight. When Korra (with the assistance of Mako’s face) broke Bolin’s heart he ran away from the problem upset rather than dealing with it. And despite the issues it caused their team he never tried to bring it up to try and resolve the issues. There is also the fact that when faced with conflict he generally tries his hardest to avoid it. Bolin is much more of a lover than a fighter when it comes to handling his own problems.
-Education: Being a homeless streetkid for so many years’ means that Bolin doesn’t have much in the way of formal education. He wouldn’t be the one to ask if you wanted information on history, mathematics or… anything that would be hard to learn while living rough. He’s more street smart than book smart in any given situation.

First Person: Training wings!

Third Person: When he was younger, a lot younger, Bolin remembered Mako carefully telling him what to do if he got lost when they were separated. The first step was to look at the street signs and figure out whose territory he was in. If it was controlled by a rival of the Triple Threats then he was supposed to get out of there as fast he could. If not, he should follow the street signs to the station and stay there until Mako showed up to get him.

But at sixteen Bolin was pretty sure those rules needed some updating. Especially for situations where he woke up in the middle of the woods in nothing but a pair of pants that were definitely not his with no memory of how he wound up there. Plus white was such an inefficient color to wear anywhere, really. It got dirty easy whether with soot, dirt or grass stains. It wasn’t really a big deal, to be really honest, but thinking about how stupid it was to dump an Earth Bender in the middle of the woods kept him distracted from thinking too much about the wings that were sprouting out of the middle of his back.

Because honestly, it was freaking him out. So it was easier to stare at the trees and wonder how far he was from the city and how mad Mako was going to be whenever he managed to get back. He really did have to get back so Mako wouldn’t get too angry with him. Glancing around, Bolin made sure no one would see him get into an earth bending stance. He lifted his dominant foot and brought it down hard on the ground in an imitation of Lin’s sonar technique.

And as he expected, it didn’t do anything. “Well, it was worth a try…” He muttered, rubbing the back of his head before setting out to find civilization the old fashioned way.
